Have you been the victim of pregnancy discrimination?

As a woman, you know there is no greater joy than giving birth. However, you also know that being pregnant doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be able to take time away from work.

Despite the fact that there are laws in place to protect against pregnancy discrimination, this remains a major problem throughout the country.

As the name suggests, pregnancy discrimination is when an employer discriminates against a woman for being pregnant. This can take on many forms, including but not limited to: terminating the woman's employment, demoting her, or being turned down for a raise or promotion.

Steps to take

Do you have reason to believe you were the victim of pregnancy discrimination? If so, you should take the right steps at the right time. This is not always easy to do, as you have a lot on your plate. Even so, you don't want to let your employer get away with the way they've treated you.

Here are some of the steps you should take:

  • Record all instances of discrimination, such as emails from a supervisor that have crossed the line.
  • Report the discrimination to the HR department, requesting that they look into the situation and get back to you as soon as possible with more information.
  • Don't forget about it. Many companies will hope that you simply forget about your claim of discrimination. For example, they'll continue to put you off when you ask what they've found.
  • Learn more about your legal rights. Nobody wants to take this s tep, but if you are unable to resolve the problem with your employer you may need to take legal action to ensure that your rights are protected. In some cases, you may be able to receive compensation for any damages.

Just because a woman is pregnant doesn't mean that she is unable to do her job. Pregnancy discrimination comes in many forms, all of which are extremely serious. If you find yourself in this position, you shouldn't wait another day to take action. There are steps you can take to fight back, protect your rights, and ensure a better future for yourself and your child.
