Looking at some steps an accident victim can take after a hit-and-run

A hit-and-run accident, whether the victim is a motorist, a pedestrian or a cyclist, can result in serious injury and damages. When the victim is unable to identify the individual responsible for the crash and obtain his or her contact and insurance information, there can be a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness, particularly if the victim is not adequately covered by his or her own insurance company.

Knowing what to do in the moments following a hit-and-run accident is important to ensure the best possible chance of seeking recovery later on. Obviously, the immediate concern is the crash victim’s safety, so the victim should stay put. There are some things a hit-and-run victim can do in response to the accident as well.

After contacting police and informing them of the accident and all the details the accident victim can remember, it is a good idea, as far as possible, to take pictures of the vehicle and any other damages or injuries to document the accident and to write down all the details the accident victim remembers, particularly details which will help police to track down the driver responsible for the crash. If possible, the accident victim should look for witnesses to the accident, obtain their names and contact information, and take statements from them. Police will also conduct their own investigation, of course, but it doesn’t hurt for the victim to do their own evidence gathering.

Following the accident, the accident victim should also contact his or her insurance company and file a claim, and get in contact with an experienced personal injury attorney. In a future post, we’ll look at this issue further, particularly with respect to problems that can arise with insurance claims.
